Basically, we are listing our events in the Bay Chapter newspaper, The Yodeler.
We are not accepting any more subscriptions, as of Monday, March 31, 2008. What does this mean to you as a SFSS Subscriber? It means that we will be refunding a pro-rated portion of your subscription to you. You can expect checks for your refund to be sent out sometime after July 1, 2008. We will be using your most recent mailing address in order to refund your moneys. If you would like the Executive Committee to donate your pro-rated portion of your subscription to the Bay Chapter of the Sierra Club, we will be glad to do that for you. Please email Pam Hampton-SFSierraSingles@aol.com-our editor, with this choice before Sunday, June 15, 2008.
A lot of time and energy has been put into this new concept for the SFSS and it was not decided overnight. We are attempting to streamline our operations and we find that this is the most cost effective way to handle our situation.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email Richard Lardner - Chairperson: richardlardner@sbcglobal.net.
Thanks for your support during your subscription! We look forward to continuously seeing you on our events!

Thursday, May 15: San Francisco Dinner "Around the World in Seven Months: One Part: The Journey from Beijing to Moscow: Social hour 6 pm, dinner 7, show 8--City Forest Lodge, 254 Laguna Honda Boulevard, San Francisco (across from Laguna Honda Hospital and downhill from Forest Hill Station; take Muni's, K,L,M or 43). Come early for street parking (no sidewalk parking please). Our speakers, Bryan and Audrey Gillette, took seven months off work and away from their careers to make their dream come true--to go around the world... and to do it their way. Their way was not the usual way. No guided tour. They will explain to you that it does not have to cost an arm and a leg to do such a trip, and you don't have to eat only noodles and sleep on benches in a park. Reservations are required for this exciting evening (no attendance for program only).
They spent a full year planning for the logistics of their trip and they spent a great deal of time agreeing on what they wanted to see and do. They ended up carrying 30 pound packs and found that to be the best arrangement for jumping onto airplanes, into taxies, being crammed into China's subways, as well as climbing onto elephants' backs. They will share their tips on planning, clothing and equipment for such a trip. A trip around the world cannot be compressed into an hour's presentation, so Bryan and Audrey have chosen to show us and tell us about the portion of their trip that includes Southeast Asia, China, and a spectacular 10 day train ride from Beijing to Moscow. Bryan has a bachelor's degree from UC Davis and an MBA from Cal State University at Hayward. He has extensive work experience in the corporate world, but more importantly, he is a traveler. In 1990 he completed a solo bicycle trip of 4,000 miles across and around the US and has done many other long-distance bicycle trips. He has been to 28 countries on 4 continents, as well as 26 of the 50 United States. Audrey has a bachelor's degree from UC Davis and has spent her professional career as a corporate events project manager and also as a manager of food and music festivals. She too has traveled extensively, visiting 30 countries on 4 continents and 23 of the 50 United State. Non-members are welcome. Mail check for $13.50 made out to "Sierra Club, S.F. Bay Chapter" to Barb Bourns at: 274A Connecticut St, San Francisco, CA 94107. Checks must be received by Mon, May 12, 2008. Specify clearly which dinner your want. Bring your own wine or soft drinks. Glasses and ice available. Let us know if you are a vegetarian. Questions? Call Barb before 9 pm at (415) 431 6054. Make your reservations early

You can become a Sierra Singles leader! Lead hikes, bike rides, camping trips, social outings or other activities you create. You could also organize trail maintenance outings in local parks, or select a Habitat Restoration event. Contact an Executive Committee member or Activities Chair, or ask any leader for details on qualifying to become a leader when you meet them at an event. Any of them will be glad to help you get started. |
Help make the no host carpools work. If you're driving please stop by a nearby carpool to pick up others for events.
Thanks
On all hikes, be sure to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy footgear. Wear or bring clothing appropriate for the conditions you could encounter. Long sleeve shirts and long loose-fitting pants, are good protection from brush scratches and ticks. Bring sun block and tick repellent if you're susceptible.
Most parks do not allow dogs or other animals to be brought to the parks. Exceptions are noted by invitations within listings.

(Hikes which begin & end the same day.) Distance: 1. up to 6 miles 2. 6 to 10 miles 3. 10 to 15 miles 4. Over 16 miles Elevation gain: We recommend you use hiking boots for all trail activities - even day hikes. Always bring enough water for the trip. Elevation gain is the sum of all uphill segments of a trip. If you are new to the activity, start with an easy trip until you have learned your own limits. BICYCLE RIDES: Terrain Pace |
We encourage use of carpools, but because of insurance restrictions activity leaders cannot arrange them for you. On overnight trips, find out who is going & make your own arrangements, including how much passengers will pay driver for ride; we recommend drivers & passengers agree upon rate before trip, & that drivers be paid upon arrival at the destination. You will normally ride back with the same driver. If you decide for some reason not to ride back with the same driver, pay driver full round trip amount. Your driver was counting on your share for the full round trip. We recommend the rate of compensation of 25¢/mi divided by the total people in the car. This rate includes not only gas, but wear & tear on the car, which is only fair. Remember, your driver has put their vehicle at risk, especially under winter driving conditions, to give you a ride. This rate may vary, depending upon the efficiency of the vehicle. On some activities, carpool pickup points & times will be indicated in the schedule; if you are driving, do others a favor & stop by the carpool pickup location nearest you - the system is only as good as its volunteers. Carpool location codes are: DC Daly City BART taxi area OTHER RESOURCES: AC Transit 510-839-2882 National Headquarters Sierra Club 415-977-5500 |
